How DO YOU Prevent A Windshield Crack From Spreading?
A small crack in the windshield is easy to repair, but replacing a cracked or chipped windshield can be quite expensive. However, there are several things you can do to prevent a small crack from spreading. Using masking tape to seal and reinforce the crack will help prevent it from getting bigger. If the scratch or crack is shallow, you should also cleanse it occasionally with rubbing alcohol. Never apply plastic resin on a chipped windshield; this could cause the chip to spread further.
We've all seen other drivers driving around with a cracked windshield before and this is a common occurrence. We're all busy and don't have time to fix a cracked windshield. We have to take time off and take our vehicle to an auto glass shop to get it repaired. Continuing to drive your vehicle with a cracked windshield will be dangerous because you risk enlarging the crack. Cracks in windshields are common in winter months and even more so when the temperature changes rapidly. Windshield cracks do not just occur from age, but when cracked windshields are hit with something like a stone or debris, the crack can spread quickly. There are preventative measures that you can take to avoid long cracks in your windshield:
Preventing a windshield crack from spreading requires a combination of proactive measures and swift action to mitigate further damage. The primary objective is to stabilize the existing crack and reinforce the integrity of the glass to prevent it from extending further. One effective strategy is to apply a temporary sealant or adhesive over the crack as soon as possible. This sealant acts as a barrier, preventing moisture, dirt, and debris from infiltrating the crack and exacerbating the damage. Additionally, it helps to stabilize the surrounding glass, reducing the likelihood of further cracking due to external stressors such as temperature fluctuations or road vibrations.
Another crucial step in preventing crack propagation is to avoid subjecting the windshield to sudden changes in temperature or pressure. Extreme temperatures, such as those encountered during hot summers or cold winters, can cause the glass to expand or contract, placing additional strain on the crack and increasing the risk of spreading. Similarly, driving over uneven terrain or encountering potholes and speed bumps can transmit vibrations through the vehicle's frame, potentially causing the crack to widen. Therefore, exercising caution while driving and avoiding rough roads can help minimize the risk of further damage.
Furthermore, it is essential to refrain from applying excessive pressure or force to the cracked area, as this can accelerate crack propagation. For instance, slamming the doors or trunk of the vehicle or forcefully spraying water during car washes can exacerbate the damage and cause the crack to spread. Additionally, avoiding activities that may place additional stress on the windshield, such as installing roof racks or carrying heavy loads on the roof, can help prevent further damage.
Seeking professional windshield repair as soon as possible is perhaps the most crucial step in preventing a crack from spreading. Professional technicians possess the expertise and specialized equipment necessary to assess the extent of the damage accurately and implement appropriate repair techniques. Depending on the severity of the crack, they may opt for methods such as resin injection or windshield replacement to restore the integrity of the glass. Prompt repair not only prevents the crack from spreading but also helps maintain the structural integrity of the windshield, ensuring optimal safety for drivers and passengers.
Regular maintenance and inspection of the windshield can also aid in early detection of cracks and chips, allowing for timely repair before they escalate into more significant issues. Periodically inspecting the windshield for signs of damage, such as small chips or surface cracks, and addressing them promptly can help prevent further deterioration and costly repairs down the line. Additionally, keeping the windshield clean and free of debris can help reduce the risk of damage and prolong its lifespan.
In conclusion, preventing a windshield crack from spreading requires a proactive approach that involves applying temporary sealants, avoiding temperature and pressure extremes, exercising caution while driving, refraining from applying excessive force, seeking professional repair promptly, and conducting regular maintenance and inspection. By taking these preventive measures, drivers can mitigate the risk of further damage and ensure the continued safety and integrity of their vehicle's windshield.

- Don't park under a tree. Falling debris from trees can shatter your car's windshield.
- Avoid direct sunlight. During hot weather, avoid sunlight because the glass can expand or warp which will worsen the crack.

SCHEDULE YOUR AUTO GLASS REPAIR SOON
When needing replacement with a cracked and damaged front windshield, we are Costa Mesa's auto glass repair shop. We highly recommend to replace or repair your windshield if it is severely damaged. If the crack on the windshield is larger or longer than a dollar bill, please call us immediately to get it replaced. Repairing a large crack on a windshield is too late because the crack will continue to grow. You're able to drive with a small crack or chip on the glass, as long as you can still have a good vision of the road and damaged area does not impair your vision. If the damage is severe, it's recommended not to drive the vehicle until the windshield or auto glass has been replaced. The damaged area on the glass will gradually affect the structural integrity of the glass. Tiny or small cracks on the glass can spread quickly and expand, and ultimately can reach to a point where driving the vehicle is unsafe and dangerous. If you are driving with a cracked windshield, the glass can shatter and injure you. Tiny particles of glass can injure both the driver and the passengers inside the vehicle.
Auto Glass tech
The auto glass has been advancing for decades. In 1839, the first patent for auto glass was filed. Since then, there have been many new innovations that have been incorporated into auto glass depending on the time period. The first true innovation in auto glass was when windshield wipers, which were manually operated, became electric-powered in 1902. There have also been many other advancements that include heated windows and tinted windows. Modern day advances include sensors so you do not have to put up your windows during bad weather conditions to activate your defroster or defogger.
The innovation in auto glass has been progressing consistently. You can see the distinction between older vehicles and current vehicles. Many modern vehicles' auto glasses have sensors and have a band on them. This innovation has been made to protect us while driving. It protects both the driver and passengers from dangerous objects and senses danger by warning us. Innovative advances in auto glass have altered the manner in which we drive by protecting us and keeping us safe. There are numerous advancements that are applied to present day auto glass. These advancements include light and rain sensors, heated glass, infrared sensor, heads up display, night vision, band for shade, and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

These advancements include light and rain sensors, heated glass, infrared sensor, heads up display, night vision, band for shade, and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
Light Sensor
Most modern vehicles are equipped with automatic headlights in that they turn on automatically during poor lighting condition or during poor weather condition. Your vehicle's lights turn on and off automatically because there is a light sensor installed in the vehicle. This sensor is usually located on the dash near the edge of the windshield, behind the rearview mirror, or mounted on the windshield near the rain sensor. The small cracks or chips on your windshield can only be repaired if they are small. When the crack on the windshield is larger than a dollar bill, the windshield must be replaced along with the technology attached to it.
Rain Sensor
If there is a square panel mounted on the windshield near the rearview mirror, there is usually a rain sensor installed. The sensor turns the windshield wipers on by detecting the amount of droplets on the windshield. When you need to replace your auto glass, check the rain sensor's wiring to see if it is still intact. If not, then you may need to buy a new sensor.
Heated Windshield SENSOR
Does your vehicle have a button with a heated windshield picture on it? Or does your vehicle have small wires in the glass? If yes, then chances are your windshield is heated. These wires can be hidden and can be found on luxury vehicles. They are in the glass to raise the temperature of the surface of the glass to avoid build up of ice, condensation, and precipitation, which improve visibility. You will need to get your heated windshield replaced when it becomes damaged so that the system can continue to work properly since your windshield will not have enough electrical contact to heat the glass.
Infrared WINDSHIELD GLass
Some vehicles are equipped with infrared glass. This can be found when you see a purple haze on the glass when viewing from the outside. Please check with the manufacturer or the owner's manual to see if your vehicle has infrared glass. The infrared-reflective glass filters out some of the infrared rays from the sun which results in a decrease in the vehicle's interior temperature. This keeps your seats, steering wheel, and other plastic parts inside of your vehicle cooler.
HUD or Heads-Up Display
A HUD or a heads up display projects images onto the windshield which permits the driver to focus more while driving. A HUD shows the very same info or data that can be found on your dashboard. These info or data may include the tachometer, speedometer, and GPS location. These are associated with the vehicle's computer that is similar to rain sensors. It may be more expensive to replace a windshield with an HUD. We work with numerous car insurances to assist with the expense of replacing your vehicle's windshield.
Night Vision Glass
Night vision sensors assist the driver with seeing objects that are not within reach of the vehicle's headlights. This innovation can decisively help the driver in emergency circumstances by alerting the driver and voiding accidents. Night vision sensors use thermographic sensors to detect heat back to the vehicle to decide the distance of the articles that are ahead. Sensors for night vision are mounted in different locations on the vehicle. Assuming the night vision sensor is mounted on the windshield, you should look at the wiring prior to replacing your windshield. Inform us as to whether your vehicle is outfitted with night vision to guarantee we replace the right auto glass on your vehicle.
Shade Band
Shade bands are not installed on all vehicles. For vehicles that are installed with them, they are there to protect the driver from the sun's brightness and are normally three to six inches long. They are introduced at the highest point of the windshield and the primary reason for the strip is to impede the sun and simultaneously not obstructing your view. There is a variety of colors from dark blue to gray lessen the sun's glare on the driver's eyes.
Advanced Driver Assistance System
Numerous vehicles today have this system installed. Known as ADAS, this system works together as a safety enhancement in the vehicle to alert the driver and help avoid from crashes or different issues. A few examples of ADAS system are adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, lane keep assist, automatic parking, lane departure warning, and blind spot monitors. Assuming any of these frameworks are attached to the windshield, it's vital that they are recalibrated and reinstalled correctly.
